On this corner once stood a little bar for sailors and an abandoned lot. After the transformation of Franklin Square and City Market, it became a very desirable location for a new upscale hotel, with food service, meeting rooms, and underground parking with valet service. Gunn Meyerhoff Shay was selected to design the hotel, and obtain the Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic District Board of Review, and then worked with Atlanta architect Buck Lindsay to make sure that the building met these community standards. Working in collaboration with a team of engineers, architects, landscape architects an specialized builder, the project was completed in 2005 for $18,000,000. Originally opened as the Garden Hotel, it was re branded with the prestigious Hilton Garden flag two years later, and has since been one of Savannah’s most successful hotel properties.
