Located at the foot of the I-16 off ramp and next to the City’s Liberty Street Parking Garage, this hotel is literally the first building that most people see when they arrive in Savannah. The difficult site is nestled among some historic residences and a more recently constructed residential condominium complex, and provides an important transition in scale to the historic squares to the east. After another Savannah architect gave up trying to solve this riddle, Gunn Meyerhoff Shay was enlisted to fulfill the client’s aggressive program, and obtain approval for a 5 story structure. After obtaining the Certificate of Appropriateness and planning approvals, the firm collaborated with a Charlotte based architect to coordinate a team of engineers, architects, landscape architects and interior designers to produce construction documents and obtain competitive bids for just under $14,000,000 in 2004.
