Pedestrian access from the east end of River Street to and from Trustees Garden has been a dangerous problem since Bay Street was widened over 50 years ago. The development of Eastern Wharf and the River Street East compounded this challenge. Working in conjunction with the City of Savannah, and with GMShay’s prior experience with the public-private partnership on the Montgomery Street Stairway, the firm developed a master plan for a series of public access private plazas, a beautiful stairway in a rain garden, and a pedestrian bridge from Emmett Park’s long walkway across the East Broad Street ramp. These high quality public access improvements will provide a pedestrian environment that is safe, shady and pleasant for millions of people to enjoy, and complement the rest of Savannah’s world-famous Riverwalk, turning a dangerous liability into a community asset.
